Learn About Borderline Personality Disorder & Treatment at Life Healing Center
Individuals who are suffering from untreated symptoms of borderline personality disorder are likely experiencing a great deal of turmoil within themselves and among the relationships they have with others. Borderline personality disorder, also referred to as BPD, is a mental health condition that causes sufferers to have an unstable sense of self and intense fears of being abandoned by others. Those with BPD often feel a strong urge to connect with other people, yet are quick to devalue relationships when there exists a potential, whether actual or perceived, threat of being left out or not made a priority by another person. When the stability of a relationship or relationships is questioned, BPD sufferers often resort to drastic and sometimes life-threatening measures of preventing abandonment that are frequently executed on impulse. Furthermore, the distorted self-perception of these individuals can cause the onset of self-harming behaviors or other self-destructive actions to occur, as people afflicted with borderline personality disorder frequently feel pangs of self-loathing and painfully diminished self-esteem when the relationships they hold in high regard are not providing them with the security they desire. Allowing symptoms of borderline personality disorder to remain a constant without treatment will result in insurmountable discord and strife. However, there are several treatment options that currently exist that can greatly improve the lives of people battling BPD.
At Life Healing Center, we understand the emotional pain of borderline personality disorder sufferers. We also recognize the turmoil that ensues when these individuals are grappling with other mental health concerns and chemical dependency problems at the same time. Especially if these individuals are struggling with a traumatic past in addition to other afflictions, the mindset of these individuals is often wrought with feelings of anxiety, helplessness, and/or hopelessness.
In coming to Life Healing Center, men and women can receive treatment and support, learn coping skills, and develop newfound confidence in knowing that life does not have to be governed by the presence of a mental illness, such as BPD. Our caring and compassionate staff is ready, willing, and able to help you or a loved one come to realize a healthy, happy existence that is deserving of all people.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Enter Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment
Close friends and family members who witness a loved one struggling with borderline personality disorder are often at a loss for what they can do to help the person they care about. In many instances, it is not known that the turmoil these individuals are going through is the result of this personality disorder and, therefore, they may feel as though not much else can be done other than to try to help alleviate anxious feelings or the hurt that is going on. Rest assured, however, as there are some things that you, a concerned friend or family member, can do to help a loved one get the care that is needed:
- Research borderline personality disorder and come to understand the signs and symptoms of this condition, as doing this will give you a better understanding of your loved one’s mindset.
- Do your best to refrain from engaging in an unhealthy, highly dependent relationship with your loved one. It is perfectly appropriate to be there for your loved one, however, making it so that the person you care about is unable to function without your presence can contribute to the worsening of BPD symptoms.
- Establish a safety plan with other concerned loved ones and the person with BPD. This plan should include action steps for what is to be done in the event your loved one engages in self-destructive behaviors, such as self-harm, or conveys a desire to take his or her own life.
- With every effort to be compassionate and empathic, it is a good idea to discuss the need for treatment with your loved one.
- Offer to assist your loved one in searching for a treatment provider who can meet his or her unique needs.
- Be open to hearing about your loved one’s concerns pertaining to seeking treatment and suggest that he or she reaches out to a provider. Doing this could alleviate any apprehensions he or she may have about seeking mental health treatment.
Finally, it is also a good idea to put forth the effort to be part of your loved one’s treatment. Working in collaboration with your loved one and his or her treatment providers can help demonstrate healthy and appropriate relationships and set realistic expectations for what is expected of those relationships going forward. This is also a great way to show your support as your loved one works on his or her healing and recovery.

Our team of experienced professionals, which is comprised of a board certified adult psychiatrist, therapists, nurses, clinical technicians, licensed drug and alcohol counselors, and ancillary therapists, is committed to providing culturally-sensitive, effective, and compassionate treatment so that patients can leave our center with improved overall wellness.
When a person begins treatment at Life Healing Center, that individual will be embarking on a truly life-changing experience that is tailored to meet his or her specific and unique needs. Our thorough assessments will gather pertinent information, identify the most pressing concerns plaguing our patients, and reveal underlying contributors that have led to seeking treatment at our pioneering center. This information will be used to devise an individualized treatment plan, which will then be put into action after the patient is assigned to one of our three Core Programs. Our Serenity, Empowerment, and Hope residential programs are all designed to care for specific treatment needs and can include the following effective therapeutic interventions and approaches:
Detoxification services: In the event a person comes to our center wishing to overcome an addiction to substances, detox may be necessary before a patient engages in our residential programming. These services involve ridding the body of the toxic substances that have contributed to an addiction so that patients can then embark on therapeutic interventions and work on recovery and sobriety. Medical professionals supervise these services so as to minimize the risk involved, and every effort is put forth to make patients as comfortable as possible. These services are recommended on a case-by-case basis and the need for this service will be discussed prior to formulating a finalized treatment plan.
Medication management: When a person is battling a mental health condition that causes severe symptoms that cannot be treated via therapies alone, certain medications may be recommended as part of a patient’s treatment plan. Our highly trained psychiatrist evaluates patients who may be in need of medication, can prescribe medication, and will then monitor the progress of each patient should medication management become a part of a patient’s care while at Life Healing Center. Medications prescribed, as well as dosages given, can be altered depending on the patient’s response to them and decisions to make changes to medications can be discussed when meetings occur with our psychiatrist.
Individual therapy: In order to give our patients the one-on-one time they need to process their past and current experiences while at our center, each patient receives the opportunity to partake in individual therapy sessions with a therapist. These sessions can be a time to establish individual goals, process victories and setbacks, and work on skill building within the sanctity of a one-on-one therapeutic relationship.
Group therapy: An integral part of the care offered at Life Healing Center is the inclusion of group therapy. This treatment method allows patients to receive support and learn from others who have had similar struggles. The following topics are among those covered in the groups offered at our center:
- Trauma resolution
- Healing shame
- Disease Model of Addiction
- Relapse prevention
- Preparing for discharge
- Conflict resolution
- Healthy lifestyles
- Living in balance
- Emotion regulation
Family therapy: Available on an as-needed basis, family therapy sessions are designed to heal relationships with those closest to our patients. The patient’s assigned primary therapist conducts family sessions and the overarching goals for this treatment method are to instill healthy communication skills, resolve conflict, and foster a strong network of support that can serve our patients and their loved ones well for a lifetime.
Experiential therapy: Designed to increase our patient’s awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection, Life Healing Center offers various experiential therapies. With the ability to foster true healing, the following are among the experiential therapies our programs feature:
- Group art therapy
- Movement therapy
- Group equine therapy
Ancillary therapies: Led by contracted ancillary therapists, our residential programming options feature the following, which are proven effective in helping to further patients along in the healing process at Life Healing Center:
- Individual art therapy
- Individual equine therapy
- Somatic experiencing
The combination of treatment methods and interventions incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan is determined prior to starting treatment at Life Healing Center. However, if certain therapeutic interventions are deemed appropriate during the course of treatment, revisions can be made to said plan so as to provide clients with the most effective care and positive treatment experience possible.
Discharge Planning and Continuing Care
From the moment a man or woman begins treatment at Life Healing Center, the discharge planning process commences. During the course of treatment, we assess our patients’ ongoing needs so as to recommend the most appropriate support for when patients leave our center. Establishing an aftercare plan is a collaborative effort that occurs between a patient’s primary therapist and the patient, and we supply discharge planning groups during treatment in order to effectively prepare clients for discharge. It is our goal to make sure that our patients leave Life Healing Center with the confidence and skills needed to prevent the recurrence of problematic symptoms and behaviors, as well as the confidence to continue the progress made while in our care.
