When an individual is struggling with oscillating moods that range from intense depressed feelings to emotional highs that are synonymous with mania, it is likely that that person is suffering from bipolar disorder. A mental health condition that can cause a great deal of disruption in a person’s life, bipolar disorder is one mental illness that requires therapeutic intervention in order to manage any existing symptoms in a truly effective manner. The episodes of depression that are known to occur can prevent a person from accomplishing tasks, cope with turmoil in a healthy manner, and/or abstain from abusing drugs and/or alcohol as a means of numbing the distress that is present. Furthermore, those grappling with bipolar disorder also experience episodes of mania that can cause them to display emotional excitability, engage in reckless behaviors that are executed on impulse, and/or prevent them from getting restful sleep. These drastically different mental states have the ability to impact a person’s ability to perform well at work, interact with others, or function with little disruption on a daily basis. Failing to seek treatment for a mental health disorder of this kind can render a number of detrimental consequences that could be irreversible. Fortunately, there are effective treatment options that exist that can care for those battling bipolar disorder; treatment options that can help any additional mental anguish that could be plaguing these individuals.
At Life Healing Center, we understand the emotional pain of bipolar disorder sufferers. We also recognize the turmoil that ensues when these individuals are grappling with other mental health concerns, chemical dependency problems, and/or intimacy disorders at the same time. The Connection between Bipolar Disorder and Trauma
Enduring any kind of traumatic experience can affect a person’s life in a profound way. Sufferers of bipolar disorder, however, can be especially impacted by such an experience or experiences. If an individual is struggling with untreated symptoms of bipolar disorder, surviving a trauma can greatly affect the severity of symptoms present. The amount of time between episodes of depression and mania can shorten and cause an individual to suffer from rapid-cycling mood shifts. Furthermore, the emotional lows and highs could become more extreme and lead to even more devastating consequences. Additionally, if a person possesses a genetic predisposition to this illness, the occurrence of a trauma can lead to the onset of bipolar disorder symptoms.
Those who do not seek treatment for bipolar disorder and residual trauma symptoms are likely to be met with obstacles in nearly every facet of their lives. Relationships could become strained, work performance could decline and lead to job loss, substance abuse could begin and lead to an addiction, risky behaviors could emerge and lead to serious injury, and the overall wellness of the individual could deteriorate. What is important to know, however, is that there are treatment providers that supply the care needed to help people manage bipolar disorder symptoms and process trauma in a healthy way, thus preparing these individuals for the bright futures they deserve.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Watching a loved one alternate between periods of depression and lengths of time displaying heightened levels of emotional excitability can be heart wrenching. You, as a concerned friend or family member, may not know what you can do to help the person you care about when many of your efforts to make his or her life less tumultuous seem futile. As someone close to this individual, there are steps you can take to assist your loved one in getting the life-changing help he or she needs. Consider doing the following:
- Talk with your loved one about how he or she is feeling. Pay close attention and listen to his or her most pressing concerns.
- Research bipolar disorder and come to understand the causes, symptoms, and effects that result when this disorder is left untreated.
- Look into viable treatment options that are proven effective in treating bipolar disorder, as well as other concerns like addiction and trauma. Treatment providers that are equipped to care for a wide range of concerns are more attuned to identifying contributing factors that can affect the symptoms of bipolar disorder.
- Convey the importance of seeking treatment for bipolar disorder and encourage your loved one to engage in a treatment program.
- Offer to accompany your loved one to any scheduled assessments, as this is a great way to show your support.
Once your loved one has engaged in a treatment program, there are some things that you can then do to help your loved one while he or she navigates the therapeutic process:
- Find out if family therapy is part of your loved one’s treatment plan and commit to being part of these services.
- Remain in contact with your loved one and remain encouraging when he or she reports victories or setbacks while in treatment.
- Consult with your loved one’s treatment providers to find out what you can do to help your loved one remain successful during and after treatment is complete.
- Remind your loved one that it is in his or her best interest to adhere to recommendations made while in treatment and to be open to any new experiences available to him or her.
Lastly, it is a good idea to stay abreast of the effective coping skills that your loved one has learned while in treatment. Your loved one can provide you with this information and you will be doing him or her a great service by encouraging him or her to continue to practice healthy methods for coping with symptoms and other stressors once he or she has returned home.

Our team of experienced professionals, which is comprised of a board certified adult psychiatrist, therapists, nurses, clinical technicians, licensed drug and alcohol counselors, and ancillary therapists, is committed to providing culturally-sensitive, effective, and compassionate treatment so that patients can leave our center with improved overall wellness.
When a person begins treatment at Life Healing Center, that individual will be embarking on a truly life-changing experience that is tailored to meet his or her specific and unique needs. Our thorough assessments will gather pertinent information, identify the most pressing concerns plaguing our patients, and reveal underlying contributors that have led to seeking treatment at our pioneering center. This information will be used to devise an individualized treatment plan, which will then be put into action after the patient is assigned to one of our Core Programs. Empowerment and Hope residential programs are designed to care for specific treatment needs and can include the following effective therapeutic interventions and approaches:
Detoxification services: In the event a person comes to our center wishing to overcome an addiction to substances, detox may be necessary before a patient engages in our residential programming. These services involve ridding the body of the toxic substances that have contributed to an addiction so that patients can then embark on therapeutic interventions and work on recovery and sobriety. Medical professionals supervise these services so as to minimize the risk involved, and every effort is put forth to make patients as comfortable as possible. These services are recommended on a case-by-case basis and the need for this service will be discussed prior to formulating a finalized treatment plan.
Medication management: When a person is battling a mental health condition, such as bipolar disorder, that causes severe symptoms that cannot be treated via therapies alone, certain medications may be recommended as part of a patient’s treatment plan. Our highly trained psychiatrist evaluates patients who may be in need of medication, can prescribe medication, and will then monitor the progress of each patient should medication management become a part of a patient’s care while at Life Healing Center. Medications prescribed, as well as dosages given, can be altered depending on the patient’s response to them and decisions to make changes to medications can be discussed when meetings occur with our psychiatrist.
Individual therapy: In order to give our patients the one-on-one time they need to process their past and current experiences while at our center, each patient receives the opportunity to partake in individual therapy sessions with a therapist. These sessions can be a time to establish individual goals, process victories and setbacks, and work on skill building within the sanctity of a one-on-one therapeutic relationship.
Group therapy: An integral part of the care offered at Life Healing Center is the inclusion of group therapy. This treatment method allows patients to receive support and learn from others who have had similar struggles. The following topics are among those covered in the groups offered at our center:
- Trauma resolution
- Healing shame
- Disease Model of Addiction
- Conflict resolution
- Healthy lifestyles
- Living in balance
- Emotion regulation
- Relapse prevention
- Preparing for discharge
Family therapy: Available on an as-needed basis, family therapy sessions are designed to heal relationships with those closest to our patients. The patient’s assigned primary therapist conducts family sessions and the overarching goals for this treatment method are to instill healthy communication skills, resolve conflict, and foster a strong network of support that can serve our patients and their loved ones well for a lifetime.
Experiential therapy: Designed to increase our patient’s awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection, Life Healing Center offers various experiential therapies. With the ability to foster true healing, the following are among the experiential therapies our programs feature:
- Group equine therapy
- Group art therapy
- Movement therapy
Ancillary therapies: Led by contracted ancillary therapists, our residential programming options feature the following, which are proven effective in helping to further patients along in the healing process at Life Healing Center:
- Individual art therapy
- Individual equine therapy
- Somatic experiencing
The combination of treatment methods and interventions incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan is determined prior to starting treatment at Life Healing Center. However, if certain therapeutic interventions are deemed appropriate during the course of treatment, revisions can be made to said plan so as to provide clients with the most effective care and positive treatment experience possible.
Discharge Planning and Continuing Care
From the moment a man or woman begins treatment at Life Healing Center, the discharge planning process commences. During the course of treatment, we assess our patients’ ongoing needs so as to recommend the most appropriate support for when patients leave our center. Establishing an aftercare plan is a collaborative effort that occurs between a patient’s primary therapist and the patient, and we supply discharge planning groups during treatment in order to effectively prepare clients for discharge. It is our goal to make sure that our patients leave Life Healing Center with the confidence and skills needed to prevent the recurrence of problematic symptoms and behaviors, as well as the confidence to continue the progress made while in our care.
