While numerous individuals are familiar with mood disorders including depression or anxiety, there is another form of mood impairment that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) states can be found within nearly 20% of individuals who are looking to obtain care in an outpatient setting. Known clinically as adjustment disorder, this common mental health condition occurs in response to a serious trauma or stressor within one’s life. While it is typical to display depressive symptoms as a response to a sad event or tragedy, these symptoms will often clear themselves in due time with the appropriate attention and good self-care. However, some individuals will continue to suffer from symptoms of adjustment disorder including anxiety, depression, fatigue, and a marked impairment in functioning long after the triggering event. When this happens, it is likely that the individual is suffering the effects of adjustment disorder, and he or she might need professional care to defeat this troubling condition.
At times, individuals who are grappling with adjustment disorder will look to block the pain of their condition by abusing dangerous substances. The effects of attempts such as these are fleeting, and tend to result in an individual suffering from a worsening of his or her symptoms. In turn, he or she will likely develop a substance use disorder, which is an additional stressor and health concern. Regardless of the substance or substances that an individual abuses, obtaining help at a treatment center that is capable of supplying services which address mental illness and substance abuse simultaneously will be imperative for a successful recovery. At Life Healing Center, we know that in order for an individual to heal, he or she must address all areas of his or her health at the same time. This means partaking in comprehensive care that reflects one’s mental, emotional, behavioral, and physical issues with an all-encompassing approach. We, at Life Healing Center, believe that an individual is more than his or her symptoms, and we have developed a flexible program that is able to offer personalized treatment for each individual who trusts us with his or her care. With our assistance, you or someone you care for can defeat the strife of an adjustment disorder and break free from the pattern of chemical dependence.
The Connection between Adjustment Disorder and Trauma
Throughout one’s life, a person will be met with a variety of stressors and tragic events. In light of a significant hurt or loss, a period of grief is to be expected. And while there is no precise timetable for recovery, usually a person will resume the activities of daily living, and in time, start to feel like him or herself again.
But for some, trauma, either acute or episodic in nature, can illicit an emotional response that does not seem to go away on its own. And while there is no singular cause of an adjustment disorder, trauma can play a major role in the onset of symptoms of this condition. Serious trauma can impact all aspects of a person’s life, and can severely limit his or her ability to function at home, at school, or in relationships. In this way, the link between trauma and adjustment disorder is evident, and cannot be overlooked in the treatment setting.
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Watching someone you love struggle because of an adjustment disorder is a very challenging experience, especially if you are feeling powerless in regards to helping him or her. Without personal experience involving mental illness or substance abuse, helping someone you love get treatment might seem overwhelming. However, there are a handful of things you can do to encourage your loved one to obtain the treatment that he or she needs, including the following:
- Take all of the information that you have gathered and begin researching treatment centers that will supply the kinds of treatment that your loved one needs at this time.
- Speak with your loved one in a non-judgmental, approachable manner about your concerns, as well as the information that you have put together. Prepare for some resistance from him or her when it comes to the idea of treatment.
- Do everything you can to obtain information regarding adjustment disorder. Having knowledge such as this can help you gain insight into what your loved one is experiencing, as well as help you develop a deeper sense of empathy, as opposed to frustration and anger.
- Ensure that, during the time that your loved one is obtaining treatment, you are practicing good self-care. Doing so will allow you to properly support your loved one without succumbing to the stresses that this process can produce.

When a person begins treatment at Life Healing Center, that individual will be embarking on a truly life-changing experience that is tailored to meet his or her specific and unique needs. Our thorough assessments will gather pertinent information, identify the most pressing concerns plaguing our patients, and reveal underlying contributors that have led to seeking treatment at our pioneering center. This information will be used to devise an individualized treatment plan, which will then be put into action after the patient is assigned to one of our three Core Programs. Our Men’s Sexual Integrity, Empowerment, and Hope residential programs are all designed to care for specific treatment needs and can include the following effective therapeutic interventions and approaches:
Detoxification services: In the event a person comes to our center wishing to overcome an addiction to substances, detox may be necessary before a patient engages in our residential programming. These services involve ridding the body of the toxic substances that have contributed to an addiction, thereby allowing patients to embark on therapeutic interventions and work on recovery and sobriety. Medical professionals supervise these services so as to minimize the risk involved, and every effort is put forth to make patients as comfortable as possible. These services are recommended on a case-by-case basis and the need for this service will be discussed prior to formulating a finalized treatment plan.
Medication management: When a person is battling a mental health condition, such as adjustment disorder, that causes severe symptoms that cannot be treated via therapies alone, certain medications may be recommended as part of a patient’s treatment plan. Our highly trained psychiatrist evaluates patients who may be in need of medication, prescribes medication, and monitors the progress of each patient should medication management become a part of a patient’s care while at Life Healing Center. Medications prescribed, as well as dosages given, can be altered depending on the patient’s response to them and decisions about these changes to medications can be discussed when meetings occur with our psychiatrist.
Individual therapy: In order to give our patients the one-on-one time they need to process their past and current experiences while at our center, each patient receives the opportunity to partake in individual therapy sessions with a therapist. These sessions can be a time to establish individual goals, process victories and setbacks, and work on skill building within the sanctity of a one-on-one therapeutic relationship.
Group therapy: An integral part of the care offered at Life Healing Center is the inclusion of group therapy. This treatment method allows patients to receive support and learn from others who have had similar struggles. The following topics are among those covered in the groups offered at our center:
- Conflict resolution
- Healthy lifestyles
- Living in balance
- Relapse prevention
- Preparing for discharge
- Trauma resolution
- Healing shame
- Disease Model of Addiction
- Emotion regulation
Family therapy: Available on an as-needed basis, family therapy sessions are designed to heal relationships with those closest to our patients. The patient’s assigned primary therapist conducts family sessions and the overarching goals for this treatment method are to instill healthy communication skills, resolve conflict, and foster a strong network of support that can serve our patients and their loved ones well for a lifetime.
Experiential therapy: Designed to increase our patient’s awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection, Life Healing Center offers various experiential therapies. With the ability to foster true healing, the following are among the experiential therapies our programs feature:
- Group art therapy
- Movement therapy
- Group equine therapy
Ancillary therapies: Led by contracted ancillary therapists, our residential programming options feature the following, which are proven effective in helping to further patients along in the healing process at Life Healing Center:
- Individual equine therapy
- Somatic experiencing
- Individual art therapy
The combination of treatment methods and interventions incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan are determined prior to starting treatment at Life Healing Center. However, if certain therapeutic interventions are deemed appropriate during the course of treatment, revisions can be made to said plan so as to provide clients with the most effective care and positive treatment experience possible.
Discharge Planning and Continuing Care
From the moment a man or woman begins treatment at Life Healing Center, the discharge planning process commences. During the course of treatment, we assess our patients’ ongoing needs and recommend the most appropriate support for when patients leave our center. Establishing an aftercare plan is a collaborative effort that occurs between a patient’s primary therapist and the patient, and we supply discharge planning groups during treatment in order to effectively prepare clients for when they exit our program. It is our goal to make sure that our patients leave Life Healing Center with the confidence and skills needed to prevent the recurrence of problematic symptoms and behaviors, as well as the confidence to continue the progress made while in our care.
